2)Artist Statement
“My use of ethereal gesture and expressionist forms has since set the tone for my highly charged prismatic color field paintings. I aim to rethink the very parameters of contemporary painting, and my work touches on many pertinent and pressing concerns around the practice of chromatic mark making, and how these relate to artistic ideals in the 21st century. My martyristic paintings inhabit the space where consciousness descends into dream; where pattern and color expand to become an immersive sensory experience. In this celestial space, I seek to examine this dream-like suppression of recognizable imagery and capture the visceral sensations with the sublime nature of drips and the colorfield. Multiple layers of tension – between the duality of conscious and subconscious surrealist automatism, flat surface and illusory depth – propel my Aquarian desire to use visual cues as a means of stimulating ascending metaphysical sensation.”

* . °•★|•°∵Exploring Artistic Horizons: A Journey to the South of France ∵°•|☆•° . *
My name is Jared Betts, and I am a neo-abstract expressionist painter, gardener and sculptor with a rich background that informs my artistic practice. As a former skateboarder, my journey into the world of art has been both unconventional and transformative. My artwork, which can be found in private and corporate collections around the globe, has been showcased in over 200 exhibitions, spanning cities from Tokyo to Paris, London, Iceland, and New York. I have participated in several artist residencies, including those in Iceland, Ireland, and the jungles of Costa Rica, culminating in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Costa Rica. Currently, I work out of a studio on the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, where the natural beauty of the landscape continues to inspire my creative process.
An integral part of my artistic journey is the exploration of iconic art locations, and I am particularly excited about the opportunity to participate in a summer residency in the South of France. Over the two-week program, I will have the chance to visit renowned destinations such as the Picasso Museum in Nice, the Matisse Museum, and Fondation Maeght. These visits will not only deepen my understanding of the masters who have influenced my work—such as Picasso, Cy Twombly, Matisse, Rothko, Joyce Pensato, Joan Mitchell, Diebenkorn, and the ethereal Pat Steir—but also provide a unique context for my own artistic expression.
In addition to my artistic endeavors, I wrote my first book about the past 20 years of my art, reflecting on my journey and the evolution of my creative voice. I am also starting a YouTube series titled "NOT A STARVING ARTIST: How to Live in Abundance Through Art." In this series, I will travel the world, sharing my experiences filtered through an artistic lens. I aim to challenge the toxic notion of the "starving artist," which I believe is detrimental to great art. My show will combat the idea that artists are meant to toil in solitude and poverty, instead demonstrating a new perspective on life filled with beauty, fantasy, adventure and abundance. This journey will also contribute to my goal of creating my own artist residency at my home on the Bay of Fundy on the east coast of Canada.
The residency in the South of France promises a period of creative immersion, allowing me to focus on my practice, collaborate with fellow artists, and draw inspiration from the rich culture, nature, and history of the region. I believe that my art is unique because it synthesizes various influences, from the New York abstract expressionist movement in the 50s, to the vibrant fashion patterns of the 80s to the neon aesthetics of the 90s and the technological advancements of the 2000s. This eclectic mix of styles has shaped my distinctive color palette and artistic voice over the past 20 years.
In recent times, I have faced personal challenges, including the loss of my brother and his husband. Through art, I have found healing and a renewed sense of purpose. This experience has emboldened me to reach for the stars, making me an ideal candidate for this residency. The opportunity to meet + collaborate with 24 other artists taking part in this beautiful residency will be unparalleled. Recently I have been collaborating with artists; including a forest artist and a wave painter, which allowed me to merge wave + forest landscape with abstract expressionism, further expanding my artistic horizons making a painting that is truly unique.
Visiting the Picasso + Matisse Museum has long been a dream of mine, and I am confident that this residency will significantly benefit my art, heart, body and mind in a nebulous way. I am eager to engage with the vibrant artistic community in the South of France and contribute my unique perspective as a mid-career artist. This experience will not only enhance my practice but also foster meaningful connections that will inspire my work for years to come.

This sculpture pays tribute to my father’s Uncle Wallace Doak, a master of fishing fly ties and owner of a world famous tackle shop named W.W. Doak on the Miramichi River. His dedication to the art of fishing and the beauty of the river inspired me to capture the essence of the majestic salmon in this piece. Each detail reflects the craftsmanship of fly tying colors, celebrating the deep connection between the fisherman, the colors of fly ties and the river. This sculpture honors my uncle's legacy and the rich fishing culture of the Miramichi through my personal artist style and lens.
