ESSAY PROPOSAL -
"Ocean Whispers: Dreams of the Abstract Abyss."
Mural Project Proposal:
Project Overview: We propose the creation of a large-scale mural titled "Tides of Expression," or "Ocean Whispers: Dreams of the Abstract Abyss" to be located at the PORT beside the Farmers Market + the NSCAD Port Campus, adjacent to the vibrant waterfront of Halifax. This mural will serve as a dynamic fusion of the immersive seascapes of Katharine Burns and the abstract expressionism of Jared Betts, creating a unique visual dialogue that celebrates the ocean's beauty and complexity. This mural would be a moment in time for art history merging two completely different styles into one cohesive mural.
Local interaction - the cruises docking there and the cultural /historical impact + workshops and artist talks for Halifax in general + also for NSCAD students.
Artist Collaboration: Both artists, Katharine Burns and Jared Betts, are distinguished NSCAD graduates (2009/2010) with extensive national and international exhibition experience. Katharine’s evocative portrayals of the ocean will be complemented by Jared’s vibrant, abstract interpretations, resulting in a mural that captures the essence of the sea while engaging with contemporary artistic movements. This collaboration not only highlights their individual talents but also represents a significant cultural contribution to Halifax, showcasing a never-before-seen artistic endeavor on the East Coast.
Concept and Design: The mural will depict the ocean in all its multifaceted glory, from serene waves to tumultuous seas, reflecting the emotional spectrum that the ocean evokes. Katharine’s realistic seascapes will flow seamlessly into Jared’s abstract forms, creating a visual narrative that invites viewers to explore the depths of their own connection to the ocean. The design will incorporate playful elements and unexpected surprises, enhancing the pedestrian experience and encouraging interaction with the artwork.
*it may also involve - LED or actual neon components in or around. If additional lighting budget were to be provided. TBD if successful in getting this mural.
Community Engagement: In conjunction with the mural, we plan to host artist talks and workshops for NSCAD students and the public, fostering a deeper understanding of the artistic process and the themes explored in the mural. This initiative will not only enrich the educational experience at NSCAD but also strengthen community ties through art.
Lighting and Durability: To enhance the mural's impact, we will consider incorporating special lighting elements that will illuminate the artwork at night, creating an engaging experience for pedestrians and further enhancing the urban landscape. The mural will be crafted using high-quality, durable materials that withstand the elements, ensuring its longevity and vibrancy for years to come.
Conclusion: "Tides of Expression" promises to be a landmark project that not only beautifies the Downtown Halifax area but also serves as a testament to the power of collaboration in the arts. By merging the talents of two innovative artists, we aim to create a lasting impression that celebrates the ocean's allure and the rich cultural fabric of our community.
More about mural details -
* The proposed mural project aims to create a vibrant and engaging public artwork that reflects the cultural heritage and community spirit of the area. This initiative seeks to transform a prominent wall space into a canvas that tells a story, celebrates local history, and fosters a sense of belonging among residents and visitors alike.
*think also about how lighting could be included in or around to light it up at night

KATHARINE BURNS
I am a Nova Scotia-born artist, and my work is deeply inspired by the coastal landscapes of my
home province. The ocean’s constant ebb and flow, its intricate textures, and shifting moods form
the core of my artistic practice. I aim to capture its dynamic energy, creating emotive and detailed
paintings that resonate with viewers.
My art has gained recognition both within Nova Scotia and internationally, with works featured in
private and corporate collections across Canada, the United States, and Europe. Being celebrated
in my home province is especially meaningful, as I take great pride in contributing to the vibrant
creative community of Nova Scotia. It is an honour to be part of the province’s artistic fabric.
I create from my studio in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, continually inspired by the landscapes that have
shaped both my art and my identity.

Murals have always played an important part in communities through the visual storytelling of artists creating work which reveals history, culture and personality of place. A mural can define a community, enhance the places where people live and work, and inspire all who see and experience it.. This proposal by Jared and Katharine is an exciting idea. The potential this mural will have by bringing together two established talented local artists who exhibit on a National + International level - will create something that explodes with colour, storytelling and a representation of place; the ocean, in a way no other artists have done or could do. Halifax history is defined by the North Atlantic and I believe this proposed public artwork will become an iconic image for the city.
